Oak Standard KD grooved terrace board 25x140 mm

Oak is one of the most popular types of hardwood in Germany. Only pedunculate oak and sessile oak are used for decking. With their positive properties, they represent an interesting alternative to exotic woods. The heartwood is predominantly light leather brown with occasional reddish tones.

Oak is a medium-hard hardwood and can be easily worked with all tools. The raw density is mainly in the range of 650kg to 760kg per cubic meter of wood (at approx. 15% wood moisture). Due to its natural durability (DIN-EN 350-2, corresponds to class 2-4) it can be used outdoors. Holes for the fastenings must always be made to prevent the fastening screws from being unscrewed and also to avoid possible cracks in the wood.

The term KD describes the drying method used to dry the wood from its fresh state to 16-18%. In this case, it is a technical drying process in a drying chamber under controlled conditions. (AD corresponds to air drying).

Oak terrace wood is also characterized by a rustic look because knotty material is used for these boards. The strong, rustic wood appearance and varying wood colors are a special feature and expressly desired. However, the low strength across the grain encourages cracking and the wood is sensitive to persistent moisture. This means that even typical moss formation in the joints can quickly lead to rot.

Due to the high proportion of tannic acid, chemical reactions occur in combination with iron. These reactions are visible in the form of black-blue spots. To avoid this, all connections are made of stainless steel (A4 recommended). When exposed to the weather, the wood initially "bleeds" (tannic acid is washed out). Components located under an oak terrace should therefore be protected. The good properties of the oak terraces are not affected in any way by this.

Oak wood quickly turns dark grey when exposed to the weather. If this is not desired, untreated oak decking should be treated with a pigmented oil soon after installation. Oak decking is a suitable product for purists and oak lovers.
