Garapa is a light-colored, high-quality decking wood that impresses with its natural durability and mechanical strength. The wood color is initially honey-yellow and develops a warm brownish patina after installation.

Origin:
Tropical South America – Southern Brazil, Northern Argentina, and Paraguay.

Durability:
According to DIN-EN 350-2, Garapa is classified as Class 3, which allows for long-term use, provided there is no direct ground contact.

Technical properties:

• Density: 790–1,010 kg/m³ (at 12–15 % wood moisture content)

• Weight: approx. 3.3 kg per linear meter for standard 25x145 mm boards

• Brinell hardness: 30–79 N/mm² – significantly harder than domestic woods such as white oak

• KD drying: Technical kiln drying to 16–18 % wood moisture content for dimensional accuracy and stability

Swelling and shrinkage:
Garapa shows moderate swelling and shrinkage behavior and absorbs moisture slowly. A gap of at least 4 mm must be maintained during installation.

Workability:

• Processing with carbide-tipped tools is recommended

• Interlocked grain can make cut surfaces slightly rough

• Silica deposits (SiO₂) increase tool wear

• Always pre-drill holes for screws to avoid cracks or snapping

Iron-tannin reaction:
Garapa contains tannins that lead to grey-blue discoloration upon contact with ferrous metals. Therefore, the use of A4 stainless steel for screws, fasteners, or railings is strongly recommended. Water-soluble ingredients can also cause staining, so surface water should be drained away reliably.
